Double Chin
What Causes a Double Chin?
Submental fullness, commonly called a double chin, develops from fat cells accumulating beneath the chin, and genetics play a major role in who develops it and how prominent it becomes. This is why even young, healthy-weight patients can have a noticeable double chin, it’s not exclusively tied to overall body weight the way many people assume.
Weight gain and aging can both contribute additional fullness or make an existing double chin more noticeable, and as skin loses elasticity and collagen over time, skin laxity under the chin can compound the appearance of fullness even when fat volume itself hasn’t changed significantly.
How to Detect a Double Chin
- Soft fullness or a visible fold beneath the chin, most noticeable when looking down or in profile
- Fullness that persists despite a healthy weight and consistent exercise
- A less defined jawline compared to how your jawline used to look
- Fullness that's become more pronounced gradually with age, sometimes alongside looser skin in the area
- A combination of fat volume and skin laxity, both of which affect how the area responds to treatment
When Is It Worth Treating a Double Chin?
- Submental fullness bothers you in photos, profile views, or the mirror
- Diet and exercise haven't changed the appearance of the area, which is common since this fullness is often unrelated to overall body fat
- You're interested in a non-surgical alternative to liposuction or a more invasive procedure
- You want to understand whether fat, skin laxity, or both are contributing to your specific concern, since that affects the right treatment approach
What Happens If a Double Chin Is Left Untreated?
A double chin isn’t a medical concern, so there’s no health risk to leaving it as is. That said, submental fullness generally doesn’t improve on its own, and for many patients it becomes gradually more noticeable over time as skin laxity increases with age, even if the underlying fat volume stays relatively stable.
Because effective treatment exists and is well-tolerated, the main cost of waiting is simply living with a concern that bothers you for longer than necessary. There’s no treatment advantage to waiting, earlier treatment doesn’t make the process any more complex, and addressing it sooner means enjoying the results for a longer period.
The Genesis Dermatology Process
- A consultation to assess how much of your fullness is fat versus skin laxity, and to confirm you're a good candidate for injectable treatment
- Kybella treatment, a series of small injections of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule that permanently breaks down fat cells beneath the chin
- A typical treatment plan involving 2 to 4, and sometimes up to 6, sessions spaced about a month apart for optimal results
- Minimal downtime, with most patients returning to normal activities the same day, alongside some expected temporary swelling
- A combined approach with skin-tightening treatments for patients whose concern includes meaningful skin laxity alongside fat volume
